How to Find Time to Write

So writers, you want to write.

Now what?

Make time to write.

But life is so busy. As a type-A mama, I struggle with my to-do list on a daily basis. If I could have my way, my home would be spotless. I’d spend half the day playing with the kids on the floor and cuddling with my husband at the end of the night. Of course, I’d also have hours to work on blogging and writing my latest novel.

But there’s this pesky thing called reality.

When you have a three-year-old and a one-year-old, spotless doesn’t exist.

By the end of the night, I’m too tired to enjoy time with my husband or steal a few minutes to write. The children are either sick, teething, or just plain whiny.

Each day, I’m pulled in a million directions. As writers, what do we do?

Make it happen.

Set aside a designated time to write. If you don’t plan to write, it’ll never happen. Just like every other area of life, prioritize. Most of my writing occurs between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. It’s what works for me. I’m a night owl and the kids are asleep (most of the time).

Write when you’re inspired. I like to have a schedule and a plan, but sometimes inspiration comes at the worst moments. Jot down a few notes, then write as soon as you can.  Always have a phone or a notebook nearby.

Set aside a place. Since I’m still co-sleeping with my one-year-old, most of my writing occurs laying in bed, next to him. I’m propped up with pillows and typing slowly. But (almost) every Saturday, I take off for two to three (or four) hours to work on my writing. I head down the road to Crispers and I write. I get myself a soda and let the words flow. If the words don’t flow, I plan what needs to happen next.

Set a goal. Each day I aim to write at least 300 words of my WIP plus work on a blog post. Now, 300 words isn’t much, but it’s a start. My minimum goal is 300 words, but I aim for 1,000-2,000.

So writers, what do you do to make it happen?
